What Is HeatShield Chimney Relining? How Does It Work?

HeatShield is a chimney flue repair system that was first developed in Europe approximately 30 years ago. A unique combination of ceramic and refractory materials, the sealant was created as a way to resurface terra cotta clay chimney liners that were otherwise structurally sound. While this repair solution will not work in every chimney system with a clay liner, there are different methods of application depending on the extent of the damage to the liner.

What are the different application methods/repair solutions?

  • Joint repair: Utilizing an applicator created to the exact dimensions of your flue, we go in with a pulley system and apply the HeatShield material over the existing mortar joints to fill, reinforce, strengthen, and seal the connection between every tile.
  • Resurfacing: Using the same dimension-specific applicator and pulley system, we first prep the inside of the flue with a material meant to prime for the HeatShield as well as remove any remaining dust or debris. After that dries, we go in with our specially formulated “Cerfractory” material and rather than only applying it to the mortar joints, we coat the entire inside of the flue liner which includes filling the mortar joints.
  • CeCure Sleeve Relining: If your system is suffering from extensive damage, you might be a candidate for our most intensive repair system. We prepare a custom-made, thin, ceramic-insulated, stainless steel-enforced sleeve coated with sealant on both sides that is inserted in your chimney before being coated one final time with the HeatShield Cerfractory material.

How Do I Know if HeatShield Is Right for My Chimney?

That’s kind of the tricky part – unless told by a professional after performing a thorough inspection of your fireplace and chimney system, you wouldn’t. That’s one of the main reasons we suggest staying on top of your annual sweepings and inspections. Like so much else when it comes to chimney repairs, issues, and maintenance, it’s sometimes very hard to know what exactly you’re looking at let alone discern what your options are for fixing or restoring it.

However, if you notice that you have a metal flue liner, you can be sure that HeatShield is not an option for you as their products only work in chimneys that are unlined or have a damaged clay tile liner.

Is HeatShield Relining a Long-Term Solution for Chimney Repair?

As long as you work with a certified, professional chimney service company who are applying HeatShield’s patented Cerfractory material, HeatShield is a wonderful investment for long-term chimney repairs. Because of the innovative blend of ceramic and refractory materials, HeatShield products restore your system to its optimum condition and efficiency and thus eliminate the dangers that a damaged flue liner poses by effectively sealing the cracks, gaps, and separations.

What does HeatShield protect against?

  • Exposure to harmful and poisonous chemicals
  • Loss of heat production/system inefficiency
  • Risk of chimney fires
