Most prefabricated fireplaces, or manufactured fireplaces today have refractory panels that sometimes need to be replaced.

What Are Refractory Panels?

Well, it is often called a fireplace panel or firebox liner, and it is a heat-resistant material used to line the interior of the fireplace. This acts as an insulating barrier between the fire inside and the sheet-metal exterior of the prefab fireplace.

They serve several purposes:

  • Provide protection to the surrounding walls and structure of the fireplace from excessive heat. This helps prevent damage and ensure safety of your home.
  • Improve the efficiency of your fireplace by reflecting heat back into the room. This allows extra warmth to be projected into the room while using less fuel (and helping you save on energy bills).
  • Add an attractive appearance to the interior of the fireplace. Hey, aesthetically pleasing fireplaces can really set the tone for your space!

Highpoint Chimney Services understands that chimney maintenance isn’t common knowledge among homeowners because hey – that’s our job. Don’t let refractory panel repair stress you out. Instead, let us help with inspecting your fireplace, identifying any signs of damage to the existing panels, and making any necessary repairs. We want to be your go-to experts for not just refractory panel needs, but all of your chimney and fireplace service needs.

Why Are Cracks & Chips in Refractory Panels Dangerous?

Anytime there is a crack or gap in any surface of the firebox system, it is a great cause for concern. That’s because cracks and gaps can allow smoke and toxic gases, like carbon monoxide, to enter into your home. Since carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, it can be impossible to detect without a properly functioning carbon monoxide detector installed. Prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide and smoke is extremely dangerous for your health.

Cracks and gaps can also allow fire, heat, and debris to become too close to combustible materials built around your fireplace…so close that it can actually ignite a fire. These are just a couple of examples that can be completely avoided by maintaining your fireplace.

How Do I Know If My Refractory Panels Need Replaced?

Refractory panels are prone to cracking because of the excessive heat they are exposed to. Hairline cracks are expected. However, you always want to keep an eye on any kind of cracks because, if they worsen, it increases your risk of a fire outside of your fireplace.

Long story short – if you see a crack in your refractory panel, it’s time to replace it. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends that refractory panels should be replaced when the crack is wider than 1/16”, which is about the width of a dime, or if there are multiple cracks present. Furthermore, it may also be recommended that you replace the refractory panels if the surface has eroded to ¼” thick.

But really, the best thing you can do to ensure your prefab fireplace is operating safely is to call a certified chimney repair company as soon as you notice any damage. Experts are the only ones that can tell you what needs repaired based on their inspection of your fireplace.
